Deux arcs se ferment, une ligne s’étend. Et à travers, une scène présente...

Two glulam sculpted exotic wood arcs clad in bull calf white Hermès leather and finished with a white ‘astiquage’ polish

Dimensions of sculpture: Diameter: 4.17 metres  |  Circumference: 12.8 metres

The result of an artist’s residency with La Fondation d’entreprise Hermès (Paris), this work was designed and produced at the Maroquinerie de Sayat, Auvergne, France. Invited as an inaugural artist to work in one of Hermès’ private leather manufactures (or ‘workshops’), the residency was devised to nurture the relationship between artist and craftsmen and to promote the exchange of ideas and expertise between the two.

Deux arcs se ferment, une ligne s’étend. Et à travers, une scène présente... proposes a close observation, metaphor and “take” of the artisans themselves at work - their activities, their postures, their dexterous and scrupulous movements imbued within their fine sense of craftsmanship... this ease, rhythm and temporality deemed akin to that of a ballet dance, funambule (tightrope walker) or in-house saddle-stitch. These “choreographic moments” - themselves gestures - become the gesture itself which the work reflects.
